Quality of Site- A good resume service should be hosting a highly professionally designed site as they are in the business of making strong first impressions! A quality site is one that offers the visitors valuable information, not just sales pitches. Sure, all companies need to market themselves but the site should also address the visitor’s needs. Most respected services include numerous links related to ”FAQs,” career expertise in the form of articles, resume samples, clear pricing and service explanations, an ”About Us” page, testimonials and stated credentials. The site should be visually pleasing, easy to navigate, contain its own URL (much more credible than ”freehomepage/townshipmain/resumesbyjan.htm”), contain well-written content and of course, spark your interest. Homemade sites are easier to spot – they are just one-page jobs claiming cheap pricing and not much else. Conclusion – First impressions in this instance are usually spot on; if you aren’t impressed, don’t bother.
Choose the Right Format – One thing you need to remember is that there is not one universal formatting methodology because, in truth, there is no cookie-cutter way of writing a resume. What works best for one person may not be best for another. Some people will benefit from a Chronological resume whereas that format may be detrimental to someone who has jumped around a lot in their career. The only thing I can suggest is that you do your homework. Know the different types of resumes (Chronological, Functional, Targeted, and Combination) and know the distinct merits of each. Then make an informed decision as to which style is best for you. If you are surfing the web and looking for a good resume sample or template to use as a guideline for your own resume, make sure the sample you settle on is appropriate considering your background, the industry you’re in, and your career intentions.
Poorly formatted resumes: Every now and then while working in my position as a Corporate Recruiter, I receive resumes the old-fashion way, through the U.S. Postal Service, or as most people call it these days, snail mail. Although this is not my preferred method to receive resumes, I don’t typically hold it against a candidate; unless of course the resume is so badly formatted that it is unreadable. Or, even worse, the resume is hand-written! Not too long ago, I received a handwritten resume for a management position. There is no way that I would ever forward a resume of this nature to a hiring manager. No matter how a resume is submitted, it should be professionally formatted, edited for misspelled words and grammatical errors, and definitely should be typed! Beware! The most misspelled word on resumes (and my biggest pet peeve) is manager; if the word is spelled as manger, spell check does not catch the error!
Qualifications – Including academic achievements on the first page will depend on individual circumstance. Typically, academic information will be included up front if there is limited work experience of note (less than 2-3 years). If relevant work experience is greater than 3 years, then education should appear towards the end of the resume. However, like all rules, exceptions exist. You may want to include education up front if you believe it positively differentiates you from the competition or if applying for an academic role which places great emphasis on academic qualifications. Photographs – The general rule is to avoid placing your photograph on your resume unless stipulated by the recruiter. Weight of opinion suggests that adding a photograph is a gamble as it can work either for or against the applicant depending on a variety of factors relating to both the recruiter and the applicant (including sex, age, attractiveness, photo quality, etc). Because submitting a photograph is ultimately a gamble that won’t necessarily come off, it is best to let the resume speak for itself.
Fix My Resume. Let’s set this straight now–there is no simple fix. The screening process counts on the fact that so many resumes don’t make the mark. Writing a resume is tough. That’s all there is to it. Most people do not like to write. Most people do not like sales. A resume is both – it is a written sales pitch. Ouch! Double whammy. These top resume tips will improve chances that your resume will make it through the initial 10-second evaluation round.

RESUME STYLES There are several styles of resumes along with numerous variations. Your experience and the kind of job you are applying for will help to determine the style of resume you use. The two basic styles are: Chronological Resumes and Functional Skills Resumes. Some of the variations include the main themes of business, academic, general, student, standard, professional, or engineering. A Chronological Resume lists work experience in reverse chronological order (the most recent experience first). It includes some descriptive text about each position, usually described in about one paragraph. This type of resume offers several advantages: it is widely accepted, they are easy to read, and they show a clear pattern of your development. The disadvantages include: it does not highlight your major accomplishment(s), nor do they effectively show your other skills. Functional Skills Resumes highlight your skills and accomplishments rather than providing a chronological record of your job history. Your accomplishments and skills are listed at the beginning. Your job history is listed at the end of the resume. This type of resume allows you to call attention to your achievements. The major disadvantage is that employers may find it difficult to follow your work experience. Many people discover that a combination of these two kinds of resumes is the best way to go. You may want to try several different types of combinations before settling upon a final design.
