Your new ASCII resume will be universally readable, no matter what computer system the recipient uses. It will also be easy to manipulate for entry into applicant tracking databases, eliminating the inherent difficulties of scanning and converting your paper resume with OCR systems. There is no denying that the Internet has caused what was once a straightforward process to become complex and confusing to many job hunters. Yet, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Like never before, as a job seeker you have immediate access to announcements and advertisements of openings around the globe. You have the ability to conduct detailed research on companies of interest. And you have unprecedented opportunity to cost effectively promote your qualifications to hundreds or even thousands of hiring authorities of just a tiny fraction of the cost of doing so through traditional methods. While the new skills you must learn may seem daunting at first, by understanding the concepts and creating your electronic resumes, you are well on your way to an efficient, effective Internet job search.
A poorly qualified candidate with an elegant, professional looking resume may get called for a job interview, while a stronger candidate can be left behind because of poor resume aesthetics or subpar presentation, and no one will ever know. It’s a one way street. A poor resume might generate a 1/20 interview ratio, while an exceptional resume should generate a 1/6 ratio or better. Resumes are often read with a negative bias. ”What is this candidate missing?” As a longtime recruiter, 50% of the resumes that I screened were poorly written. About 40% were average and only 10% were effective selling resumes. Most resumes are narrative, unfocused and are not ”selling resumes”. A Selling resume is at least 31% more likely to land interviews, 40% more likely to receive a job offer, and 38% more likely to be contacted by recruiters, compared to an average resume. A Selling resume is about 70% more likely to get interviews than a poor resume.
Qualifications – Including academic achievements on the first page will depend on individual circumstance. Typically, academic information will be included up front if there is limited work experience of note (less than 2-3 years). If relevant work experience is greater than 3 years, then education should appear towards the end of the resume. However, like all rules, exceptions exist. You may want to include education up front if you believe it positively differentiates you from the competition or if applying for an academic role which places great emphasis on academic qualifications. Photographs – The general rule is to avoid placing your photograph on your resume unless stipulated by the recruiter. Weight of opinion suggests that adding a photograph is a gamble as it can work either for or against the applicant depending on a variety of factors relating to both the recruiter and the applicant (including sex, age, attractiveness, photo quality, etc). Because submitting a photograph is ultimately a gamble that won’t necessarily come off, it is best to let the resume speak for itself.
To eliminate issues with compatibility, if the recipient has the free Adobe Reader installed, Adobe PDF is the best format in which to send your traditional resume. The PDF version of your resume will appear on the recipient’s system precisely the way it appeared on your system. For this reason, if given the choice of sending an MS Word file and Adobe PDF file, always opt for Adobe PDF. However, many recruiters and employers still prefer the MS Word file format, because this is the format they are most familiar with. ASCII text resume – If you conduct any portion of your job search on the Internet, ASCII-formatted resumes are critically important tools. Always have an up-to-date ASCII text version of your resume on your computer. This is the fastest way to contact potential employers and to apply for jobs advertised online. You must also have a text version of your resume if you wish to post in online resume databanks. As previously noted, employers rarely request scannable resumes anymore. If they utilize an applicant tracking system, they will likely request that your resume be e-mailed, either as ASCII text or as an attachment. E-mail allows the recipient to enter your resume directly into the database, eliminating the extra steps of scanning and OCR. How do you use these file formats and transit them to recipients via email? My recommendation is to actually attach the MS Word or Adobe PDF file to the email in its native file format. Then, ALSO copy and paste the text of your ASCII text resume into the body of your email (where you would normally type a message), along with a letter of introduction or other note explaining why you are sending the resume.
3. Writing achievements section: To prove you have the skills you listed on resume relate your achievements to your skills. Play with the words. Show prospective employer how you achieved certain things based on your important skills. Show the employer how your skills are beneficial to the company. Write a good objective/summary statement: Usually objective statements comes at the top of resume. Reader is likely to read your objective statement first. Take sufficient time to write your objective statement. Do not write what you want in a job. You can tell the employer what you expect from a job in interview. Instead of it cleverly tell the employer what you can do for him. Avoid writing statements such as where I can advance my skills. Utilize my skills etc. Such statements makes employer think what kind of work suites you instead of what you can do.
Find out the working process. If applicants are to hand in their job descriptions written on paper, it is a guarantee that the resume will be copied and written in a different manner. A good writer will converse with the client and obtain information out of the applicant which he would otherwise have not produced. Time to write. A good writer will take about two weeks to complete a resume. This however, will vary according to the writer and the types of resumes written. Selection of a good resume writer is not easy. But the resume is what makes the difference between being accepted and rejected. Therefore, applicants will be greatly benefited by finding a good writer to write their resumes regardless of whether it is a sales resume or an executive resume. An effective resume doesn’t just get you a job. It gets you the perfect job.
