Essentially, getting a good resume is easier said than done. Assuming that you don’t have all day to sit around and worry about white space, you might need a little bit of extra help along the way. Anybody is capable of writing their own resume, but the fact of the matter is that there are some people who are more skilled at writing resumes than others. In fact, there are a legion of individuals out there who make their living by helping others write their resumes! These people are called professional resume writers, and employing one to help you make your resume the best that it can be might be the best investment that you can make. After all, if spending 50 dollars on making your resume look the best it can be is the difference between landing the interview and not, it’s 50 dollars well spent in this poor economy. Of course, the issue at hand is finding the right professional resume writer for you. Not all professional resume writers are created equal – and just because a certain resume writer is skilled does not mean that they will necessarily be the right choice for you.
After years of working in the executive staffing and recruiting industry, collaborating with countless hiring managers and human resource administrators across various industries, I acquired a thorough understanding of what these individuals were looking for in potential job candidates. I began to see patterns, consistencies, universal tendencies, and I began to see just how important a good resume really is. As a point of fact, hiring managers only spend around 15 seconds perusing over a new resume and they are really only looking for a couple of things when they do. They’re on autopilot, for the most part. They want to know: 1) Who have you worked for? 2) Have you had steady employment? 3) What notable achievements and recognitions have you had throughout your career? 4) What do you have to offer which will meet with their specific needs? An effective resume will answer those questions with a minimal amount of effort and, as with any effective marketing tool, it will also leave the reader wanting to know more. You want to give them just enough info to prompt them into action. That’s when they pick up the phone and call you for an interview!
With the information that the resume review sites have provided to you, you can easily start to narrow down your choices. You can choose the resume service that specializes in the type of career you are trying to pursue. If you are trying to change your career path or just graduated from school, you can easily determine which resume writing companies specialize in entry level resumes. Going Beyond the Resume. While your resume is essential to getting your foot in the door, it cannot get the job for you. There is more to it. A resume writing service can make you sound amazing on paper but you will need to prove to the potential employer that you are just as good in person as you are on your new resume. For this reason, some resume writing companies offer entire career readiness packages. In addition to your written resume, you may be able to find resume service companies that offer services like resume distribution, job search consultation, cover letter writing, interview preparation, and career consultation. The more services you are able to receive in your package, the more prepared you will be for the interview process, helping you have the best chance at being the successful applicant.
Issue #2 –Technology. Stephen is a gentle soul who is modest about his achievements. When I first read his resume I told him that something was missing. He asked ”what? And I replied ”technology.” This simple exchange highlights the fact that we often find it difficult to accurately self-describe. I know that Stephen has exceptional technical expertise, having worked with him in the past. But he had not thought to include most of it on his resume. His reasoning: he only included technology where he had an extreme level of experience and had not considered others. His measure of acceptance was so high that most technology was excluded. I assigned Stephen the task to list every technology he had used during the past eight years. It is difficult to remember specifics over an extended period of time, so it made sense to start with an all inclusive approach then refine the list based on how and how extensively he used each technology. Together we found the right list of technologies to accurately represent Stephen on his resume.
Who would be the best sources for a Resume Coach? If you want to win the resume game, your resume must be a selling document. Therefore, a talented career coach or third party recruiter, who understands both sales and the recruiting process in your field, is the most obvious choice. Paying for their time and guidance is a minor investment compared to the upside and the results it could yield. Ask yourself — if your job search is even 2 days shorter, your job offer is $2000 more, or the position obtained puts you on a faster track, is there a better investment for your career? Therefore a ”selling resume” is more than an advertisement in today’s world. It is a marketing proposal for your services. Get the edge. Get a sales-oriented coach to help you win the resume game.
Inappropriate pictures: Within the last five years I have seen a definite increase in resumes that include a picture or pictures of the candidate. Interestingly, hiring managers seem to have a difference of opinion regarding the addition of pictures; some hiring managers seem to appreciate being able to visualize a candidate while reading over the candidate’s qualifications, whereas others seem to think that it is a distraction. Personally, I am not a big fan of this practice, as I have seen the most inappropriate pictures that you can imagine! For example, I have received resumes submitted by female candidates where they are photographed with short skirts or showing their décolletage. I have received resumes from male candidates where their pictures show them in casual attire (fishing hats, swim suits, etc.), or worse, in pictures that include their whole family. However, the most inappropriate picture that I have ever seen to date on a resume was one that included a nude photo of the candidate’s genitals! Not only is this the most inappropriate picture imaginable, I have to say it is extremely creepy!! If you are inclined to include a photo on your resume it should be professionally photographed, and should include a head shot with a plain background in professional attire. My professional opinion is that if you are in doubt about the appropriateness of a picture, do not include it!
