My advice is simply to check and double-check your work. Better yet, also get a third-party to proofread your resume. You would be surprised how often someone else picks up an issue in your resume that you have missed. For many individuals I would suggest getting some form of help with your resume evaluation. This can be as simple as getting someone you know and trust to review your document, or perhaps enlisting the services of a professional resume writer. A resume writer can add significant value for many reasons, including poor grasp of language, intermittent work history, returning to the workforce after a long break or simply looking for an edge over the competition. In my experience, an independent or experienced eye cast over a resume will often identify errors, irrelevance or poor communication that the author can miss. Individuals often get ’too close’ to their resume to fully appreciate all the nuances of the document, and as a result they are not able to ’see the forest for the trees’. Like a first date gone horribly wrong, if a resume is not right the first time, don’t expect to be called back for a second chance. As outlined above, there is little sentimentality when it comes to harsh realities of resume screening. However, by following these helpful hints or getting some help from an independent third-party, you will greatly improve the chances of your resume surviving first round screening. And by avoiding the early reject pile the opportunity to further any potential relationship with a prospective employer won’t be over before it even begins.
You also can’t have any errors on your resume. Everything must be done with perfect spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. To make things even more complicated, there are different resume formats to use, depending on your level of skill and previous job history. Add in the font and text size variables and you can easily see just how complicated resume writing can be. So, essentially, resume writing companies can benefit almost anyone that is in search of a new job and is not a professional writer. Sadly, however, there are now so many resume writing companies and a lot of them really do look the same. Contrary to how similar they all look, you should know that not all resume writing companies are created equally. Prices can vary dramatically as can the services provided by each individual company. Skills and expertise of the writers are not uniform nor is the quality of resume writing. Essentially, at a glance, trying to find the best resume writing company for you can seem like an impossible task.
Prospective employers may spend as little as six seconds looking at your resume to make an assessment of your abilities and to match those abilities to their job opening. In those six seconds they do not read every word on the resume! Instead, employers look at the overall format – is it easy to read? Does this resume contain the relevant information to their particular field? Do the first bullets at the top of the resume match their job description? If any of these things do not meet their criteria, they move your resume into the ”bad pile.” Resumes in the bad pile are those resumes that will never be read completely and probably will not be looked at again. Avoid these five resume red flags to make sure you stay out of the bad pile!
18. How long is the standard resume? See question #2. The general tips of resume building are to use enough space to provide all info and to write only relevant information about yourself. 19. What resume style is preferred by employers? There are three resume building styles: Chronological, Functional, and Combination. Chronological resumes present your work history and experience most recent first. Functional resumes focus on the skills and abilities that have been acquired and can be applied to new career opportunities. Combination resumes combine elements of both the chronological and functional formats. 20. Are All Resumes Alike? I wrote above there are three basic types of resumes. The format you select should be the one you believe will best allow you to target your education, experience, and skills towards your career objectives. 21. What is a Scannable Resume? A scannable resume is one that may be ”read” by a computer equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) hardware and software. They scans your resume and puts data into a database. The software then creates a summary of your resume and ranks it among other qualified candidates for the position. This process, sometimes called electronic applicant tracking, is gathering popularity among medium- to large-sized companies as an initial employment screening device.
With the information that the resume review sites have provided to you, you can easily start to narrow down your choices. You can choose the resume service that specializes in the type of career you are trying to pursue. If you are trying to change your career path or just graduated from school, you can easily determine which resume writing companies specialize in entry level resumes. Going Beyond the Resume. While your resume is essential to getting your foot in the door, it cannot get the job for you. There is more to it. A resume writing service can make you sound amazing on paper but you will need to prove to the potential employer that you are just as good in person as you are on your new resume. For this reason, some resume writing companies offer entire career readiness packages. In addition to your written resume, you may be able to find resume service companies that offer services like resume distribution, job search consultation, cover letter writing, interview preparation, and career consultation. The more services you are able to receive in your package, the more prepared you will be for the interview process, helping you have the best chance at being the successful applicant.
Resume builders and free sources don’t care about quality or uniqueness. They usually just want a resume for their primary purpose and agenda, or it’s merely a ”freebie” service leading you in to entice you purchase other products or services. HR recruiters are limited to their own experience. Agency recruiters simply can’t spend the time. They take an average resume and try to present it with their own write ups – their own elevator pitch – in hopes of filling jobs that they will get paid for. It’s easier than rewriting your resume and honestly, they don’t have a real investment in your career if it doesn’t serve their immediate purpose. When we do it ourselves, without specific coaching, we rarely create a selling resume because we are too close to the topic and too distant from the hiring process. Are we the experts? A professional resume writer can produce good, average or poor results depending on their skills & background, and price is not necessarily an indicator of quality. The blogs are full of mixed reviews. Since this is a lifelong skill, the best choice is to seek out the proper guidance and advice so you can quickly learn to craft and tailor an exceptional resume whenever you need it throughout your career. A resume also becomes a branding tool for social networks where you are checked out and found by recruiters.
