While this is certainly not an exhaustive list of ’do’s’ and ’don’ts’, the items discussed below capture key factors responsible for early resume rejection. Brevity – A concise resume is a good resume, and will earn early brownie points from the reviewer, while an overly long resume will have the opposite effect. If a reviewer has to go actively looking for key information, you will have already received your first black mark. If you can comfortably capture information in a single page, then do so. Even if you are highly experienced, try to keep the number of pages to a minimum. Recruiters are time sensitive and will penalise unnecessarily long resumes accordingly.
Chronological Resume. 1. Most Popular Format. 2. List your work history & most recent position. 3. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current, or most recent job, first. 4. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it’s easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them. 5. Who would be the best sources for a Resume Coach? If you want to win the resume game, your resume must be a selling document. Therefore, a talented career coach or third party recruiter, who understands both sales and the recruiting process in your field, is the most obvious choice. Paying for their time and guidance is a minor investment compared to the upside and the results it could yield. Ask yourself — if your job search is even 2 days shorter, your job offer is $2000 more, or the position obtained puts you on a faster track, is there a better investment for your career? Therefore a ”selling resume” is more than an advertisement in today’s world. It is a marketing proposal for your services. Get the edge. Get a sales-oriented coach to help you win the resume game.

What resume style is preferred by employers? There are three resume building styles: Chronological, Functional, and Combination. A scannable resume is one that may be ”read” by a computer equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) hardware and software. They scans your resume and puts data into a database. Price Wars- As with any product or service, it’s tempting to choose the least expensive one. On the other hand, it’s not uncommon to believe that the highest priced service is the best; after all, they must be good in order to command thousand dollar fees, right? Wrong. While the price of the resume and limitations of your budget are important considerations, you don’t always get what you pay for. Even the ”cheapest” services may end up costing you more in the long run when you realize you’ve just thrown away money to someone who used the same Word template you could have utilized on your own without including important information. The higher-priced services may conversely, lead you to believe that you absolutely NEED a $1000 resume and frequently land their clients based on a strong sales pitch for the resume and additional services, not on their writing talent. Price should equal value, i.e., the ultimate return on your investment. If you are quoted a reasonable fee (somewhere well in-between the $99.00 guys and the $1,000+ heavy hitters), you have a good chance of paying for a well-crafted document that can easily generate more interviews, boost your confidence and frequently position you as a candidate worthy of a position that commands a higher salary.
