Representative Work- If one were to order a piece of jewelry, art or furniture, a savvy consumer will want to review the talent first, right? Nobody wants to spend money on an item without seeing samples of items or products that the ”artist” has produced. This is by far, one of the most telling tales of a resume service’s quality. Without viewing their resumes, how can you be sure that their resumes are really ARE ”the best” or the ”most successful?”
Your new ASCII resume will be universally readable, no matter what computer system the recipient uses. It will also be easy to manipulate for entry into applicant tracking databases, eliminating the inherent difficulties of scanning and converting your paper resume with OCR systems. There is no denying that the Internet has caused what was once a straightforward process to become complex and confusing to many job hunters. Yet, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Like never before, as a job seeker you have immediate access to announcements and advertisements of openings around the globe. You have the ability to conduct detailed research on companies of interest. And you have unprecedented opportunity to cost effectively promote your qualifications to hundreds or even thousands of hiring authorities of just a tiny fraction of the cost of doing so through traditional methods. While the new skills you must learn may seem daunting at first, by understanding the concepts and creating your electronic resumes, you are well on your way to an efficient, effective Internet job search.
Recognized Expertise- In addition to the presentation of impressive samples, being recognized by one’s industry peers is a big accomplishment. When a writer is featured or endorsed as a resume expert, they are likely to have already proven themselves; it’s also simple to check. If you’re doubtful, ask for proof and follow up on what you’re given. For example, if a website claims that the writer is featured as an expert on another site, visit that site to make sure or do a search for the writer’s name, which will frequently lead to you all kinds of links provided they are well-connected! Acknowledgment also takes the form of having their work published in a book that includes resume samples. There are many leading books out there dedicated to resumes and cover letters alone, usually comprised of samples from professional writers. It’s not easy to have your work selected because there is usually a flood of competition from other writers (and multiple submissions from each!) so having one’s work published numerous times is a great testimonial to one’s knowledge and ability. Follow up for you is easy, because most of these books can be found in major bookstores. Be wary, though, of writers whose only claim to fame are ”quotes” in various periodicals or television shows. Most quotes are usually one-liners, not full-blown interviews and do not a writer/expert make! They are also more difficult to verify. Conclusion – Publications are generally a good thing; you just need to verify them if something sounds fishy!
While a good resume needs to hit the mark on many levels, it is crucial not to give recruiters any obvious reasons to throw your resume on the early reject pile. Below, I have listed some important items to address to ensure you avoid any obvious or glaring shortcomings, thereby making it harder for recruiters to exclude your resume in early screening.
Once Your Resume is Written. After your resume is done, the rest of the work is up to you. Unless you have chosen a resume service that offers resume distribution, it is time for you to start sending your resumes out to companies that match the career path you have selected. You need to keep in mind that a cover letter, specialized for each company you apply at, should accompany your resume. If you are unsure of how to effectively write a cover letter, be sure to choose a resume writing service that offers cover letter training. Your cover letter is just as important as your resume since it is the very first thing your potential employer will see.
1. Spend the Most Time on the Most-Read Part of Your Resume. Contrary to what you might think, the most-read part of your resume is not your name. When there are hundreds of resumes to review, names matter little in initial evaluations. The most read part of your resume is your Profile or Experience Summary. If your resume is missing this section, you are losing your best opportunity to create interest. It used to be common to put an Objective at the top of your resume. However, the Profile or Experience Summary section has completely replaced the Objective section. Why? It is a quick 3-4 sentence overview of your qualifications. This acts as an Executive Summary for a reviewer where you clearly point out why you are the best candidate for this specific position. If you don’t generate interest in this section, your chances of further review or even an interview are slim.
